ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Paul J. Schrag (1909-1992) was an author and an attorney. Unlike his title character, he and his family fled their home in Germany to Brussels and then to New York before the outbreak of World War II. The Story of Herr Rath is based on events in the lives of relatives of his. Under its German title, Die Geschichte vom Herrn Rat, this play has been produced in Germany, but this is the first staging of the English translation by the author's friend and colleague Dori Furth. Mr. Schrag's book Heimatkunde was published to considerable acclaim in Germany. He also wrote poetry in both German and English, and other works of reminiscence and fiction, now collected in the archives of the Leo Baeck Institute.
